Quickies: 3/16/2012


The New Yorker publishes a fabulous review of Dale Carpenter's "Flagrant Conduct," which tells the real story behind Lawrence v. Texas, the case where the Supreme Court overturned anti-sodomy laws in the United States. Apparently it wasn't quite as simple a story as history would have you believe. Go read this now!

Continuing our coverage of the #Kony2012 debacle, a showing of the film in Uganda ends with rocks thrown at the screen. From the Al Jazeera report, "Towards the end of the film, the mood turned more to anger at what many people saw as a foreign, inaccurate account that belittled and commercialised their suffering, as the film promotes Kony bracelets and other fundraising merchandise, with the aim of making Kony infamous." The Geek Feminism blog has a great review of Star Wars; The Old Republic that focuses on some of the problematic parts of the game – its abelism, heteronormativity and attitude towards slavery. Worth a read if you were considering playing the game. 

In far more depressing news, a trending topic on Twitter "#ToMyUnbornChild" has homophobic asshats coming out of the woodwork
