AI: Activist Fatigue

I’m wiped out. It’s probably because I’ve got a lot going on in my life right now, but my response to all of the injustice in the world lately has not been a desire to change it. I’m just feeling hopeless and helpless. I’m exhausted. Seeing the news just hurts, reading my twitter feed makes me want to cry.

I need the world to stop being awful for a little while so that I can get a break. We can go back to fighting and working for equality soon.

I am handling this by giving myself permission to tune out for a little while. I am letting myself skip whole sections of my Twitter feed, ignore Facebook, refuse to read articles and blog posts for awhile. I’m looking at videos of kittens, sewing cute things, and otherwise focusing on something else for the moment. Not forever, just for long enough.

Have you ever had activist fatigue? What do you do to recover so you can get back to working for justice?

The Afternoon Inqueery (or AI) is a question posed to you, the Queereka community. Look for it every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at 3pm ET.
