Like many people, I work in a job where I’m interacting directly with customers. Part of what that means is that I have to put up with things I otherwise wouldn’t. I don’t think my employers would expect me to accept hearing personal insults, slurs, or outright hatred, but when customers are staying under that level, I just have to grit my teeth and listen. I’ve had to sit through a speech on why bisexuality doesn’t exist, for instance, and just the other day I got to hear how hard it is for a middle-class white guy to get into a good school these days. I have no idea why they thought it would be a good idea to tell me that stuff. All I can really do is complain about it to my friends after the fact.

Have any intolerant-customer stories you’d like to get off your chest? What makes you decide whether or not to speak up? When you don’t speak up, how do you deal with the frustration?
